              What is GA4?

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the new default Google Analytics service which will replace Universal Analytics (UA) on 1 July 2023. GA4 introduces the ability to send data from both apps and websites to the same property – as opposed to Universal Analytics where websites and apps are tracked separately – helping build a better understanding of the entire customer journey. GA4 uses Firebase for app tracking and Global Site Tag or Google Tag Manager for website tracking.

              Preparing for the UA sunset

If you've been a Pugpig customer for a while now, chances are you're all set for the move over to GA4. If you're unsure, we've compiled a document entitled Google analytics, sunsets and Pugpig: What you need to know that details the things you should check to ensure that your apps and sites are ready for the migration to GA4.

Setting up a new GA4 property

There are a couple of ways to set up a new property in GA4. Instructions for both methods can be found in our Setting up Google Analytics 4 document. If you set up a new property on your own, make sure you add all of Pugpig's custom dimensions to continue tracking.

Creating custom segments from your data

Want to analyse the behaviour of a subset of your audience? In our Setting up custom segments in GA4 doc we run through how to create segments within your audience using subscriber status as an example.

              Navigating reports in GA4

With GA4 comes a suite of new reports to give you a snapshot view of your data. For a guide on the most common reports used by Pugpig's customers, take a look at our How to find commonly-used metrics and reports in GA4 doc. If you'd like to go beyond the out-of-the-box reports offered by GA4, you can build your own bespoke reports in the Explore section. We've compiled a doc detailing how to navigate the Explore section for your perusal.
