Preview content and app configurations in Pugpig Bolt
Table of Contents
You can preview draft articles, timelines and editions in both your Pugpig Bolt app and Bolt Web reader.
Use app preview when you need to check the native app experience. For most content reviews, the web reader is faster and easier to use because it runs in a browser and is not affected by the app’s local downloader cache.
Preview content in the app
App preview lets you view content that is still in draft state in the CMS.
Open the hidden menu
- Open your Pugpig Bolt app.
- Go to the Settings screen.
- Scroll to the version/build information at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the version information 10 times in quick succession.
Enable Preview mode
- Enter the admin code provided by your Customer Success Manager or Pugpig Support.
- Preview mode should activate automatically. Older versions may require you to toggle Preview mode on, if the option is shown.
- If you have already viewed the content in the app, select Clear Downloader Cache.
- Force close and reopen the app.
The app will then fetch draft articles, timelines and editions from the content source. Clearing the downloader cache is particularly important when you have previously opened the same content, as the app may otherwise continue showing a cached version.
Important: Entering an invalid admin code can prevent the app from fetching content. If this happens, replace it with a valid code or remove it, then force close and reopen the app.
Preview configuration changes
To preview app configuration changes that have not yet been activated:
- Open the hidden menu using the steps above.
- Enter the admin code.
- Toggle on Configuration Mode.
- Clear the Downloader Cache if necessary.
- Force close and reopen the app.
Configuration Mode retrieves the latest generated configuration instead of the currently active configuration. Use it when reviewing changes to app styling, copy or configuration settings.
Preview content in the web reader
The web reader can be the quickest way to review draft content. It uses the same Pugpig content source as the app, but can be opened directly in a browser and is not affected by the app’s local cache.
Preview draft content
Open your app’s web reader URL and add ?preview=true to the end, or &preview=true if the URL already contains a query string:
https://app.example.com/t/home/latest?preview=trueYou can use the parameter on the relevant timeline, article or edition URLs.
Preview configuration changes
To preview the latest generated configuration, add ?configuration_mode=true, for example:
https://app.example.com/t/home/latest?configuration_mode=trueTo preview both draft content and configuration changes, use both parameters:
https://app.example.com/t/home/latest?preview=true&configuration_mode=trueThese parameters can be used with the relevant stage or production web reader URLs.
Pugpig Express CMS preview
Express CMS preview is useful while editing content, but it may not exactly match the final app or web reader experience. Differences can occur with styling, embeds, images and other content processing.
For final validation, use the web reader with ?preview=true, or use app Preview mode when you need to check the native app experience.
Return to published content
When you have finished reviewing the draft:
- Remove the admin code to turn Preview mode off in the app.
- Turn Configuration Mode off if you enabled it.
- Force close and reopen the app.
In the web reader, remove preview=true and configuration_mode=true from the URL to return to the normal published view.
If your draft content is not visible
Check that:
- The content has been saved in draft state in the CMS.
- Content has processed through Pugpig Distribution.
- You are using the correct app or web reader URL.
- The web URL includes
?preview=true. - The admin code is valid.
- You have cleared the Downloader Cache and relaunched the app.
- You are using a recent version of the app.
If the content still does not appear, contact Pugpig Support with the content URL, the app version and the preview method you are using.
